KEREN LEE, a bass playing resident of California, Pennsylvania, United States, created the tune "Ugly" from what he considers to be ugly sounding chords: Db+, D7, Eb+, E7, which are then played in successively split octaves with some strumming and tapping in between. "I wanted to take a theme, in this case the series of ugly chords, and break it up into something progressively more interesting" says Keren. He further states that whenever he's working on a solo composition, he likes to think of what's out there, then try make sure none of it can be heard in his own work. "It's good to be influenced by other players but very difficult to keep those influences from showing up in your own work, so I strive to create compositions of sounds I haven't heard. And for good fun, I like to create parts for myself which I cannot play properly without a lot of practice." Keren Lee can be seen weekly at Jozart Studios in California, PA playing solo and/or with his band, The Huston Lee Project, or providing the low end to theatre productions in New York City and in Pittsburgh, PA.
